Eid-Fitr Obligation (Zakat Al-Fitr)

Eid al-Fitr is a joyous celebration marking the end of Ramadhaan, the holy month of fasting, and is a time of gratitude and generosity. A key component of this festival is the giving of Zakat al-Fitr, a charitable donation made before the Eid prayer.

It is obligatory upon every Muslim who possesses surplus wealth above their basic needs, and it must be given on behalf of each family member, including children. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “The fasting remains suspended between Heaven and Earth until Zakat al-Fitr is given” (Ibn Majah).

This act ensures the less fortunate can also partake in the festivities, promoting equality and joy within the community while purifying the giver’s fast from any shortcomings.

Qurbani Obligation

Qurbani, or the sacrifice of animals, is an essential act of worship for Muslims, performed annually during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah to commemorate the unwavering faith and obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) to the command of the Almighty.

This practice symbolises devotion, submission, and sharing blessings with those in need. Allah states in the Quran: “Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you” (Surah Al-Hajj, 22:37).

Qurbani is mandatory (wajib) for every adult Muslim who is sane, has reached the age of maturity, and possesses wealth above the Nisab threshold – enough to cover their needs and those of their dependents. The meat is distributed among family, neighbours, and the less fortunate, strengthening bonds of kindness and solidarity.
